Counsellor, Psychologist, or Psychiatrist — What's the Difference in Hong Kong?

Not sure whether to see a counsellor, a clinical psychologist, or a psychiatrist? This guide clearly explains the roles, what each professional can and can't do, and who is right for your situation.

You've decided to seek mental health support. But searching online returns counsellors, psychologists, psychotherapists, psychiatrists — and you're not sure which is which, or which one you actually need.

This guide lays it out as simply as possible.

Counsellors

Counsellors typically hold a bachelor's or master's degree in counselling, psychology, or a related field. They are trained to support people through emotional difficulties, life stress, relationship issues, and personal development.

Clinical Psychologists

Clinical psychologists hold a master's or doctoral degree in psychology and have completed supervised clinical training. In addition to therapy, they can conduct formal psychological assessments and make diagnoses.

Psychiatrists

Psychiatrists are medical doctors who have specialised in psychiatry. They can diagnose psychiatric conditions and prescribe medication where needed.

Which One Should I See?

For most people seeking mental health support for the first time, a counsellor is entirely appropriate. Counsellors can address the majority of everyday emotional and life difficulties — and are more accessible in terms of cost and waiting time.

If your situation is more complex — if you suspect a diagnosable condition, need formal assessment, or your difficulties are significantly affecting your ability to function — a good counsellor will refer you to a clinical psychologist or psychiatrist at the right point. You don't have to figure out the path alone.
